The Famous Bells The Cathedral Tower is home to the famous bells of St Mary's which have pealed out in joy and sadness for centuries over the city of Limerick . Their distinctive sound can be heard every Sunday morning calling the citizens to morning worship. The Cathedral bells hold a special place in the hearts of all Limerick people. The bells are rung by a committed group of ringers who's skill experience and enthusiasm has been rewarding with numerous wins and awards at bell ringing competitions over the years. If a Limerick person is asked how did they celebrate the New Year, ninety percent will answer " We went to the Bells". This means they stood near the Cathedral to hear the peals of the old year passing away and a new one beginning, just as their ancestors have done for generations. The sound of the bells of the Cathedral are as much part of the City of Limerick as the sound of the mighty river Shannon, as it passes on its way to the sea
